A Snail Farm Announces Robbery of €90K Worth of Escargot

Cleared Storage at Snail Farm Following Major Robbery

Thieves made off with escargot worth €90,000 from a producer in the north of France that supplies high-end restaurants.

The snail farm in the Bouzy area, close to the city of Reims, reported that its entire stock of both fresh and frozen snails was stolen—a “major setback” just before the festive period.

The intruders gained entry to the property overnight into Monday, cutting a perimeter fence before accessing storage facilities.

Police received a complaint days after the incident, and investigators are now on the trail.

In the meantime, the business is striving to replenish its supplies to meet end-of-year orders from customers.

Escargot: A Traditional French Gourmet Treat

Edible snails are regarded as a culinary specialty in France, usually prepared in butter with garlic or white wine before being removed from their shell.

Farmers in France typically experience a increase in demand around December, as consumers indulge with the dish for Christmas and New Year's Day celebrations.

“This is definitely not the type of post we expected we’d share as the festive season near,” the farm stated in a message announcing the incident.

They went on to characterize the event as “surprising, bewildering, and a serious setback to the entire team,” adding, “We are doing everything possible to replenish our supplies to satisfy our customers for the festive period.”

Impact of the Theft

Images captured following the theft show racks and refrigerators nearly completely emptied of snail products.

“A whole section of prepared goods was stolen from the store, and unprocessed inventory from my production area,” the farm manager explained.

“It was my end-of-year stock… We had just the right amount to manage the holidays without any worries.”

The farm has in the past provided restaurants including award-winning venues in Reims, as well as specialty food shops and individual customers.

At present, the business is working hard to recovering and ensuring that holiday orders can still be fulfilled in spite of the significant loss.
